- Date of first registering of the Society, The first Association for Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine in Serbia was established on  January 16th 1953. as a PRM Section of the Serbian Medical Society, and was part of the Yugoslav Associations of PRM.


After the collapse of Yugoslavia, The Serbian Association of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine was founded on September 14th 2003
as the Association of Physiatrists in Serbia and Montenegro and from 2006 as an independent association. It has about 250 members. All members are specialists of physical medicine and rehabilitation.
 

The location of the Association was, at the beginning, at Clinic for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Clinical Centre of Serbia in Belgrade (where former President of the Association was working) and now is at the Institute for Rehabilitation, Belgrade, Sokobanjska 17.

 

- Brief history of the origins of the Society

Serbian Association of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine is the extension of prior Association of Yugoslav physiatrists and later Association of Physiatrists of Serbia and Montenegro. With the division of the country two separate associations were formed and Serbian Association of Physiatrists was the successor. 2012 it became the Serbian Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and from 2015 it is Serbian Association of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine.


Serbian Association of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) is a logical extension of more than 90 years of organized Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine in Serbia. From 1923-4, the School of Medicine in Belgrade has a Chair of Physical Therapy and Balneology and a regular course in the curriculum of the School of Medicine. Rehabilitation was introduced in 1952 with the acceptance of the rehabilitation program of the former Yugoslavia, which was developed by the UN. The first Clinic of Rehabilitation was established in 1952 as the Federal Institute for Rehabilitation of the Disabled Workers in Belgrade (today Clinic of Rehabilitation “dr Miroslav Zotovic”).


PRM exist as indipendent exam since 1952, on Medical faculty in Belgrade.


Specialization in Physical therapy was founded in 1948 (duration 2 years), in 1959  specialization of PMR was founded as 3 years specialization, and in 1998 specialization of PMR was prolonged on 4 years.
 

Now, there is about 40 teachers of  PRM specialists in Serbia, around 750 specialists of PRM, 3500 physio and occupational therapists, 5000 beds for rehabilitation on secondary and tertiary level and numerous places for outpatients at all health care levels.

The subspecialisation of PRM is provided in the following areas
:

-        Children rehabilitation

-        Geriatrics

-        Balneology

-        Vascular Medicine

-        Pain Medicine


The subspecialisation of PRM for children is recognized and there are numerous areas of interest for the specialist of physical medicine and rehabilitation such as EMNG diagnostics, ultrasound diagnostics, rehabilitation in neurological, pediatric, respiratory, orthopedic diseases, hypobaric medicine etc.

 

- Mission/aims of the Society,

The Association was founded with the goal of meeting the needs of establishing a better cooperation between professionals, patients and the public, as well as the necessary communication and cooperation with similar societies and associations in the world. Besides this goal, other goals of the Association are the improvement of profession with better solving of expert and scientific questions within prevention and treatment in the field of physical and rehabilitation medicine, coordination of members’ activities, improvement of their work and  solving other questions important for the members and the profession in general. The aim is also to improve knowledge and cooperation of all dealing with prevention and treatment in the domain of PRM, improvment of studies, education, by-laws in the field, organizing meetings, congresses...

 

- A brief summary of  activities i.e. fields of research and information on cooperation,
Association has two meetings with the Serbian Academy of Sciences about the results of research in neurosciences.


Meeting of the UEMS board was held in Belgrade September 2nd, 2011, and during the meeting the Declaration of Intention for cooperation in the domains of Education, Quality of Care and the field of Competence in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine were signed.


For its cooperation with medical faculty, University of Belgrade, Association has received in 2014, for the 90
(1924 – 2014) years of having the subject of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Belgrade Medical Faculty, a plaquete for cooperation and work in development medicine and science in Serbia.


Association regularly cooperates with medical associations in country, with ESPRM and ISPRM, with Universities in country, Ministry of health and tourism.

 

- Names and photos of founders of the Society,

Actions towards forming the Society  was performed by Vukasin Mihajlovic, MD,PhD as he was the President of the prior Society from 1997 to 2003. On the foundation meeting, Prof Vladislava Vesović Potić, MD, PhD was elected a President, and Prof Gordana Devecerski, MD, PhD was vice president. Prof Vesović was a President from 2003 to 2010 when Prof. Milica Lazovic, MD, PhD was elected.

Serbian Association of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine publishes Journal of Balneoclimatology, which is rated as journal of national importance by the Serbian Ministry of Science.

- Congresses organized by the Society (past ones and those planned). Since 2003, once a year national congress of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine is organized by the Serbian Association of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine. In 2013 a Mediterranean Congress in Budva has been organized by Serbian Association. Next national Congress of PRM will be in Kopaonik, May 18 – 21. 2017.
